Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has been provisionally suspended by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) after leaving the national team camp amid a dispute with head coach Jorge Jesus.
The disciplinary action, announced on October 10, follows Ronaldo’s departure from Portugal’s camp in Copenhagen on September 30, ahead of the team’s Nations League fixture against Denmark. The incident came after the 41-year-old forward was left unused during Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Norway on September 27.
Ronaldo claimed that Jesus had promised him approximately 30 minutes of playing time against Norway but failed to honour the agreement.
The coach has disputed the suggestion that a formal agreement existed.
In a public statement, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner described the situation as a breach of trust, apologised to his teammates for leaving camp and acknowledged that disciplinary consequences were justified.
The FPF subsequently opened disciplinary proceedings and imposed a non-automatic preventive suspension while the matter is investigated. The federation has classified the proceedings as urgent, with the final outcome yet to be determined.
Despite the controversy, Ronaldo has indicated that he remains willing to represent Portugal in future matches. Head coach Jorge Jesus has also left the door open for his return, while the federation’s disciplinary process continues.
Ronaldo’s case now raises questions about the consequences he could face and whether the dispute will affect his role in Portugal’s upcoming international fixtures.
