‘Help me purchase a sewing machine, feed my family’
Florence Bochaberi Momanyi a resident of Bokeira located in North Mugirango, has had the physical disability since she was born. With all the trials she must deal with, Florence continues to struggle in working towards her goal of reducing her dismal state of life and gives herself a brighter future now that her sewing machine which was her only source of income broke down.
Florence was born with a genetically determined impairment that limits her mobility, having to traverse the world in a wheelchair from her early youth onward. Education and employment are just few of the areas that did not attracted her attention or that of people from similar backgrounds, and as a result, these people found themselves being unemployed, as they could not be financially independent.
"The fight is not over. Even basic things to which laymen do not attach much weight, like dressing and cooking, pose a massive problem for me. But I never allow hope to die. "
As if the life situation of Florence was not complex enough, the lack of social capabilities, as well as a lack of warmhearted services to assist elderly people with disabilities in the local community, makes the problem even more challenging. Persons with mental illness are still faced with problems such as lack of sufficient healthcare, affordable housing, and transport thus making it hugely difficult for her to go about her life.
She added that she has two children where one of them is studying in Meru University while the other one is schooling in Gesiaga high school.
Throughout every obstacles and challenges she faces Florence engages in resurrection and regeneration, which eventually helps her to transcend the whole situation and build a brighter future for herself. In order to gain skills, she has been taking up program of vocational training. Finally, she hopes to get a job that can help her generate a regular income.
"That will I not want be a burden on anyone," she discloses. "To start with, I want to provide for myself and add value to the society. A chance, just a chance is all I need to prove myself,"
She has asked everyone in the government, non-profit organizations, the general public to carry out an all-out effort on helping her with the resources and support she needs so much.
