Empowering Gesusu farmers to boost their yields
In a significant move to boost agricultural productivity and economic prosperity in Gesusu ward, Nyaribari Masaba, officers from the agriculture department conducted an educational outreach yesterday.
The event aimed at enlightening local farmers on modern farming techniques and opportunities, focusing on the cultivation of HASS avocados and dairy farming, alongside poultry farming. This initiative, supported by the county government in collaboration with the national government, underscores a commitment to fostering sustainable agricultural practices and improving livelihoods.
During the session, the agricultural officers highlighted the potential of HASS avocado farming. Known for its high demand both locally and internationally, HASS avocado presents a lucrative opportunity for farmers.
The officers detailed best practices for planting, nurturing, and harvesting avocados to maximize yield and quality. They emphasized the importance of proper spacing, irrigation, and pest control measures to ensure healthy growth and optimal fruit production.
The education program also focused on dairy farming, offering insights into improving milk production and overall herd health. Farmers were introduced to modern dairy farming techniques, including the selection of high-yield dairy breeds, proper feeding practices, and efficient farm management. The officers stressed the importance of maintaining clean and hygienic conditions for the livestock to prevent diseases and enhance milk quality.
In addition to avocado and dairy farming, poultry farming was also a key topic. The officers provided guidelines on raising poultry, focusing on breed selection, feeding, housing, and disease management.
They pointed out that poultry farming, due to its relatively low initial investment and quick returns, can be an excellent way for farmers to diversify their income streams and ensure food security.
The officers encouraged the farmers of Gesusu to actively participate in these farming initiatives. They assured the farmers of continuous support and assistance from the county and national governments.
By coming together in large numbers, farmers can leverage the available resources, including training, subsidies, and access to markets, thus enhancing their productivity and profitability.
