A tragic train derailment at the Nduka Moja Bridge in Loodokilani ward, Kajiado County, has resulted in the death of one passenger and injuries to scores of others. The accident occurred on Tuesday as the train was transporting over 100 passengers from Magadi to Kajiado town.

Emergency services, led by Kajiado County Commander Joel Langat, swiftly mobilized more than five ambulances to rescue the injured. Sixty-six passengers were admitted to Kajiado County Referral Hospital, with ten in critical condition being referred to hospitals in Nairobi for further treatment.

Dr. Fred Ayani, the hospital's in-charge, reported that the admitted passengers sustained various injuries. "We have so far received more than 60 patients, those who are in critical condition have been referred to other City hospitals such as Nairobi Hospital and Nairobi West Hospital," said Ayani.

Kajiado County Deputy Governor Martin Moshisho addressed the press outside the hospital, expressing his deep concern over the incident. He attributed the accident to negligence, blaming Tata Chemicals Ltd., the company responsible for managing the railway line. "I am told a few weeks ago, another wagon was reported to have derailed a few meters from here. As a county government we are requesting the company management to move with speed and renovate the railway line," Moshisho alleged.

In response, Tata Chemicals Managing Director Subodh Srivastav suggested that vandalism might have played a role in the derailment. "While the incident is under investigation, we note the persistent and extensive vandalism of the rail line as a possible cause of the incident," Srivastav said. ''We regret the unfortunate incident on the service that has been safely operated by the company as a community service to the remote area for over 100 years," Srivastav said.

As the investigation continues, the community grapples with the aftermath of the tragedy, demanding accountability and better safety measures to prevent future occurrences.
