Schools are finally opening today 13th of May 2024 after an extended break due to heavy rains and flooding. The turnout of students travelling back to school is still down as most parents are still afraid of the ongoing rains citing that they are not ready to risk the lives of their children.
President William Ruto yesterday asked Kenyans to pray for students as they begin their second term today.
The ministry of education Ezekiel Machogu had earlier said the lost time will be compensated and students have nothing to worry about.
Although Schools are to reopen today, some institutions may not be able to open today as the building in some areas like Homabay, Kisumu and other parts of the central regions were affected by floods.
Parents in most places said they are still in fear of the rains and will not allow their children to go to school today. They are also in tense of the budget that comes with opening school saying life has become difficult.
The administrators and students have expressed optimism that educational activities would resume after prolonged disruption due to the weather.
Met department indicates that rains will continue in the coming weeks as Kenya’s long season downpour continues.
