The National Police Service (NPS) has issued a statement regarding the tragic death of Albert Omondi Ojwang, who died shortly after being taken into custody over a social media post.

Ojwang was arrested on Saturday afternoon in Kakot, Homa Bay County, as part of an investigation into alleged false publications made on the social media platform X.

According to the police, Ojwang was lawfully apprehended by detectives and subsequently transported to Nairobi, where he was detained at the Central Police Station.

Reports emerged that he sustained head injuries while in custody. The National Police Service (NPS) clarified that the injuries occurred when Ojwang reportedly hit his head against the wall of his cell.

"While in custody, the suspect sustained head injuries after hitting his head against the cell wall. Police officers on duty promptly noticed the injuries and rushed him to Mbagathi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival" the NPS stated.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has initiated an investigation to examine the circumstances surrounding Ojwang's death.

The NPS has now emphasized its commitment to upholding constitutional standards of human rights and fundamental freedoms, assuring the public that all necessary measures would be taken in response to the findings of the investigation.

The death of Albert Omondi Ojwang has raised concerns about police conduct and the treatment of detainees in custody.
