Former Police Spokesperson Defends Actions in Boniface Mwangi shooting

Former Police Spokesperson Charles Owino, has come to the defense of the officer who shot Boniface Mwangi Kariuki, a hawker critically injured during anti-police brutality protests in Nairobi. 

According to Owino, Kariuki allegedly insulted the officer who shot him, which he believes provoked the response.

In an interview on Citizen TV, Owino claimed that a close examination of the video footage reveals Kariuki directing an "irksome slur" at the officer. 

"It was a very simple exchange. If you listen to that clip closely, you will hear that boy abusing the policeman." 

Owino emphasized that police officers require restraint, suggesting that the officer could have used a rubber bullet instead.

Owino also pointed to the young age of the officer, Klinzy Barasa, as a possible factor contributing to his loss of control. 

"Such a young person, if you abuse him, you know what may happen."

He highlighted the extensive training police receive on the use of firearms, noting that officers often face situations requiring swift action.

The former spokesperson also referenced Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen's recent "shoot-on-sight" orders, which were issued after the Gen Z protests. 

Owino clarified that ministers can only issue written instructions to the Inspector General on policy matters, as per the constitution.

Tragically, Kariuki was declared brain dead on Sunday, with his family confirming that doctors at Kenyatta National Hospital found additional bullet fragments in his brain.

 The two police officers involved in the altercation are currently in detention, pending further investigation by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority.
