Isiolo Governor Abdi Guyo's Impeachment Hearing Set for Senate Plenary
By Vera Mokeira
The Senate has opted for a full plenary hearing for the impeachment motion against Isiolo Governor Abdi Guyo.
The senate ignored the formation of an 11-member committee.
Speaker Amason Kingi ruled that the hearing will take place on Tuesday, July 8, and Wednesday, July 9.
During these sessions, the Senate will deliberate on the grounds for Guyo's removal, which include gross misconduct, abuse of office, and violations of various laws and the Constitution.
Guyo's impeachment by the Isiolo County Assembly saw 16 out of 18 MCAs vote in favor of the motion, initially filed by Sericho MCA Abubakar Godana.
The motion cited several leadership failures, on stalling of major development projects, failure to meet revenue targets and creation of an excessively large executive, including the appointment of 36 advisors and 31 chief officers, despite Isiolo County receiving the third-lowest national revenue allocation.
Issuing short-term, two-year contracts to chief officers, which the County Assembly argued fostered "an environment of fear and uncertainty."
Notably, the impeachment process proceeded despite a court order prohibiting the Assembly from doing so.
