Former CS Fred Matiang’i expected back home in three weeks

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i is anticipated to return to Kenya within three weeks after officially concluding his duties as a World Bank staff member in Washington.

The ex CS is expected back by June 21 to further his campaign for the 2027 presidential election, following his declaration on May 2 that he is prepared to vie for the top position.

Matiang’i left Kenya on May 18 to resign from his role at the World Bank, where he had been employed since September 2022.

Insiders have confirmed that he completed his responsibilities at the World Bank on May 30 and could arrive back in Kenya at any moment.

“His work at the World Bank is finished, and he has officially resigned. We expect him back in Kenya very soon, certainly by June 21,” stated a senior source familiar with Matiang’i’s plans.

His return coincides with an aggressive rebranding initiative by the Jubilee party aimed at supporting Matiang’i's candidacy for the 2027 election.

He departed following a month-long political campaign that significantly impacted the national landscape, culminating in his official announcement to run for president in 2027.

During a gathering in Gusii on May 2, Matiang’i reassured supporters that he would return to the U.S. to respectfully conclude his international duties before resuming his campaign. “You have asked me to come and serve this country. Do you want me to leave that job and come back to serve you? I will officially resign, with respect, and return to Kenya to serve my nation,” he stated.

At Gusii Stadium, he declared his readiness to pursue the presidency after receiving numerous appeals from citizens, prompting cheers from the audience. “I am ready to be President of Kenya,” he proclaimed.

Matiang’i's departure fueled speculation among some political opponents, who suggested he was backing away from his ambitions and retreating to his international role.
