Career growth of curriculum support officers in Kenya

In 1963, the government introduced Teachers Advisory Centres (TACs) to train teachers. They were led by TAC tutors who were later renamed Curriculum Support Officers in 2015.Their role was expanded to include direct support to schools and teachers across the country.

Career growth of curriculum support officers in Kenya

The teachers service commission plays a key role in improving education in kenya, one of its important roles is guiding the growth and promotion of Curriculum Support Officers.

In 1963, the government introduced Teachers Advisory Centres (TACs) to train teachers. They were led by TAC tutors who were later renamed Curriculum Support Officers in 2015.Their role was expanded to include direct support to schools and teachers across the country. 

In the year 2019, TSC introduced career progression Guidelines (CPG) for CSOs.

It had four promotion path namely; Curriculum Support Officer 2, Curriculum Support Officer 1, senior CSO and chief CSO.

According to Honourable Joseph Gitari, in 2023/2024 , 150CSOs were recruited as PTMOs. The same year 84 CSOs were promoted and in 2024/2025, 25,254 teachers got promoted. 

The promotion dependent on career progression Guidelines, available vacancies and budget. 

TSC ensures fair promotion by using a clear scoring system. It gives points for : acting roles I.e principal or deputy, time spent in current grade,performance appraisal and also age of 55 years and above which show enough experience. 

In addition to those factors, there are other important factors to be considered, like knowledge of financial management, understanding of TSC policies and ability to manage student discipline.
