Degrading Comments About Nyamira Woman Representative Anger Local Leaders
BY ERIC ABUGA
Women in Kenyan politics often encounter a toxic environment characterized by misogynistic remarks and cyberbullying. Recently, a "degrading remark" made by a former Kisii County Assembly member has sparked outrage among local leaders in Nyamira.ย
The former MCA, Kefa Morebu, made an inappropriate comment about Nyamira County Woman Representative Jerusha Momanyi during a campaign event at Kijauri Shopping Centre, where he was accompanied by former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang'i. Morebu remarked, "Jerusha doesn't wear undergarments," prompting a frenzy among the crowd.
Dr Matiangi, who had given Morebu the microphone, quickly reprimanded him for the comment. Since then, the remark has drawn widespread criticism from various leaders who accuse Morebu of disrespecting women in leadership roles.
Kisii Assembly Nominated MCA Dolfine Bwari stated that such remarks are not just disrespectful but also an assault on the dignity of all women.ย
She emphasised, "We know that such sexist attacks are meant to humiliate and silence women, but we refuse to tolerate them. As the women of Gusii, let us stand united against all forms of gender-based disrespect. We can engage in politics without insulting our women."
Kisii Woman Representative Dorice Donya added, "Iโve listened to the clip, and honestly, let me speak for many of us women: underwear and bras are often the most uncomfortable clothes to wear. No one should apologise for being comfortable."
National Assembly Majority Chief Whip Sylvanous Osoro expressed his disappointment that some supporters cheered for the inappropriate remark, stating, "It is unfortunate that the crowd was happy, and their presidential candidate smiled. We are here and hope they will feel offended once we respond."
UDA Party National Treasurer Japheth Nyakundi, who also serves as the MP for Kitutu Chache North, remarked that political competition should never resort to petty attacks against perceived opponents.ย
He condemned the comments made in Kijauri as blatant disrespect toward not only Gusii women but also young girls who deserve to grow up in a morally sound environment.
Nyakundi stated, "Such conduct is both shameful and unacceptable, especially from individuals who portray themselves as leaders. The unwarranted attacks on Ms Momanyi expose our opponents as directionless and clueless, lacking a meaningful agenda for the people under the guise of the upcoming by-elections."
He further explained that some leaders have strayed from substantial discourse, opting instead for trivialities.
"Instead of engaging in meaningful competition based on ideas that can propel our region forward, we are subjected to demeaning remarks about a leader's personal attire. We sincerely apologize to her for the indignity she experienced. We believe things will only get better."
