Officers arraigned Over Protester Shooting Amid Nairobi Demonstrations

Two police officers, Klinzy Baraza Masinde and Duncan Kiprono, have been arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts in connection with the shooting of protester Boniface Mwangi Kariuki.

The incident occurred on June 17 during anti-government demonstrations on Mondlane Street in Nairobi's Central Business District.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority filed a miscellaneous application to detain the officers, who have since been interdicted.

Magistrate BenMark Ekhubi granted IPOA 15 days to complete their investigations.

According to court filings, Kariuki was taken to Kenyatta National Hospital after the shooting and is currently in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit after undergoing emergency surgery.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations arrested Masinde and Kiprono at the Nairobi Area Police Headquarters following significant public outcry.

IPOA's investigation will include ballistic testing of recovered firearms, analysis of forensic samples from the scene, review of CCTV footage, and interviews with witnesses, including Kariuki when his medical condition allows.

IPOA is also awaiting a full medical report.

IPOA argued that detaining the officers is crucial to prevent witness interference and evidence tampering, emphasizing the intense public interest in the case.
