The video has caused speculation and criticism online, prompting the NPS to provide clarification.
In an official statement released by the Office of the Inspector General, it was explained that the incident occurred after a series of disturbances that led to the looting of shops in Nairobi.
“The National Police Service has noted a video circulating on social media, depicting a police officer holding laptops. We wish to clarify that following recent protests in Nairobi, several shops were broken into and various items were stolen."
Police officers had arrested one suspect and recovered four laptops, which are now in safe custody as exhibits. Following the arrest of a suspect, four laptops were recovered and are currently being held as evidence at the Central Police Station for safekeeping.
The NPS has emphasized the importance of ensuring that the recovered laptops are returned to their rightful owners.
They encouraged individuals who may have had laptops stolen during the unrest to visit the Central Police Station to identify and claim their belongings. NPS stated that investigations are ongoing to apprehend all those involved in the criminal activities that occurred during the protests.
They reiterated their dedication to protecting the lives and property of the public.
The statement, signed by Muchiri Nyaga, Director of Corporate Communication and Spokesperson for the National Police Service, also advised affected individuals to contact or visit the Central Police Station in Nairobi for updates and verification of recovered items.
