As the ongoing lecturersโ€™ strike enters its third week, Education Cabinet Secretary Ogamba Migos says a number of issues had been resolved.

According to CS Migos, Lecturers had opted to go on strike because of three different issues arising from three different Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBA).

Appearing before the Senate, Wednesday morning to answers to questions on the Education sector, Migos said the first issue was CBA 2021 to 2025.ย

"Lecturers were on strike last year and we went into negotiations and had a return to work formula. In 2024/25, Sh 4.3 billion was paid to them to cover months to June 2025. Sh 2.73 billion was to paid in July 2025 to cover Financial 2025/26."

The CS said Sh 2.73 million was delayed forcing the lecturers to issue a strike notice. "Two days into the strike, the amount was paid," he explained. ย

The CS told Senators that under the 2021-25 CBA, the balance of Sh 2.73 billion is to be paid in June 2026.ย

The second issue raised was CBA of 2017-2021. The Ministry of Education says that there was an amount of Sh 24 million that lecturers claimed was not paid.
"There is a question of how much is outstanding for the Union. The teams went to court and there was a ruling that the teams go to a reconcialator and have the amount verified after which the settlement can be agreed on. There is an order stopping the strike."

The third issue is of the CBA 2025-2029 ad the CS explained that the parties had agreed that this be negotiated at the beginning of the cycle 2025-2029.ย

"We have June 2025 to June 2026. They were saying that the cycle had delayed. They have had two meetings. The discussions are going, no delays."

Migos noted; "The facts are crowded in the noise. We are going to have a court appearance to on October 16 to confirm on whether the reconciliation has taken place and the outcomes. The really issue is the 2017-2021 CBA on how much is to be settled. That is the reason they are on strike."
