Ministry of Health suspends 45 facilities in SHA related fraud activities

BY ERIC ABUGA
The Ministry of Health has formally released the list of additional health facilities that stand suspended in accordance with the law.Â
Health Cabinet Secretary Adan Dulae says this decisive action underscores the Government’s uncompromising stance against fraud in the healthcare sector.
“The Social Health Authority (SHA) manages the contributions of hardworking Kenyans. These funds are meant to guarantee quality, affordable and dignified healthcare for all. Not to line the pockets of fraudsters.”
Duale says they will not tolerate any individual or institution attempting to exploit or siphon what belongs to the people.
“The government remains firm and unyielding in protecting the integrity of the health system. I reiterate government's unwavering commitment to protect the Social Health Authority (SHA) and safeguard the trust Kenyans place in our Universal Health Coverage (UHC) system,” the CS says.
Following a digital audit, the Ministry is de-gazetting 45 health facilities flagged for fraudulent activities, in addition to the 40 already suspended.
Malpractices uncovered include falsifying records, inflating and phantom billing, upcoding and converting outpatient visits into costly inpatient claims, actions that rob Kenyans of quality care.
“I confirmed the disbursement of Sh 7.7 billion to Primary Health Care (PHC), a key pillar of our transformative agenda and issued a stern warning that all fraudulent providers, facilities and patients will face prosecution and recovery of funds,” Duale explained.
To reinforce accountability, the Ministry has partnering with leading medical insurers on a Joint Anti-Fraud Action, part of broader reforms to protect public resources, strengthen partnerships and restore trust in the health sector as we advance UHC.
