Police officers have been cautioned against misusing social media platforms, particularly posting videos and photos while in police uniform or on duty.

Director of Corporate Communications and National Police Service (NPS) Spokesperson, Muchiri Nyaga, AIG, says such conduct not only violates Service regulations but also risks compromising the dignity, security, and credibility of the National Police Service.

He encouraged officers to exercise discretion and professionalism online, reminding them that their digital footprint reflects directly on the institution they represent.

Nyaga was speaking while delivering a lecture to officers attending the Promotion Course from Police Constable (PC) to Corporal (CPL) at the National Police College, Main Campus in Kiganjo.

The session, themed โ€œEffective Communication as a Pillar of Professional Policing,โ€ focused on enhancing the officersโ€™ skills in communication, leadership, and media engagement.

He emphasized that effective communication lies at the heart of professional policing, noting that an officerโ€™s words and actions greatly shape public trust and cooperation.

"Professionalism in communication fosters respect, strengthens community relations, and enhances the image of the Service."

He further reminded the officers that the media is an essential partner in promoting transparency and accountability and not an adversary.

Citing Chapter 24 of the National Police Service Standing Orders, he urged officers to ensure that only verified information is shared through authorized channels while safeguarding confidentiality and operational security.

"Clear, factual, and timely communication, especially during crises, prevent misinformation and public anxiety. Ethical, transparent, and respectful communication is critical to maintaining public confidence and upholding the Service's credibility."
