Kenyans marked Saba Saba Day with nationwide protests, a day that holds deep significance in the country's fight for democracy.
Saba Saba Day, observed in July 7, signifies the country's push for multiparty democracy. Decades later, the scenes of violence and repression were witnessed during the first commemorations.
Unfortunately, this year's commemorations took a different turn as at least 11 individuals lost their lives and many others were injured during the demonstrations.
The protests, which took place in various counties across Kenya, including Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisii, Nakuru, Meru, Nyandarua, and Kakamega, were fueled by mounting frustrations over governance, economic challenges, and instances of police brutality.
Thousands of Kenyans took to the streets, marching through towns and highways to voice their concerns.
Reports from the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights confirmed the deaths of 11 individuals due to gunshot wounds by the evening of the protests.
The protests were met with a heavy force, armed officers using excessive force in various locations. Legal organizations accused law enforcement of violating constitutional rights and laws governing peaceful protests, highlighting instances of excessive force and arrests.
The safety of the public was compromised as medical teams struggled to reach the injured due to road blockages and police actions. Families received devastating news of their loved ones' deaths, while others awaited updates on injuries sustained during the protests.
"Tragically, once again nine families will be receiving the news of the deaths of their loved ones ," LSK and PRWG-K said.
Civil society organizations have called for thorough investigations into the deaths and the conduct of law enforcement officers, emphasizing the need for accountability and respect for constitutional rights.
