THE FIVE DENOMINATORS IN PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS.
Kenya has eexperienced high-profile figures joining different political offices in a deeply rooted tribal election system.Â
From the 2019 census, Agikuyu, Kalenjin, Abaluhya, Luo, and Akamba have been calling the shots in Kenya election cycle. Similarly, they emerged as the biggest registered voters in 2022.
At independence, the President came from Agikuyu and the vice president came from the Luo communities, the ide awas to bring to an end poverty, iliteracy and ignorance.Â
The game of numbers started emerging, very strong; the late Daniel Moi from the expansive Kalenjin community. The late Oginga Odinga could become the opposition powerhouse.Â
After independence Kenya choose Oginga as the Deputy but things fall apart and Oginga was shown the door sending his hometurf; Nyanza region backt to the drawing board breeding the slogan “mtu wetu”.
The region had now shifted the action towards Oginga who they believed could led them to the promised land.Â
For 24 years of Nyayo tenure, the position of deputy rotated in Western and Central Kenya. In the 2002 general election,Â
The two major communities came up with two strong coalition, one headed by Moi and the other one of the rainbows. Moi is side fronted Uhuru Kenyatta, son of the former president.
On the other side, they picked on the late former President Mwai Kibaki, the economist.Â
Now we have two competitors for the election. one from Nyeri, and the other one from Kiambu county, under same region.
Just a reminder, in the same election the late Simeon Nyachae, former MP Nyaribari Chache and former Minister was contesting for it too. But stamina of numbers costed him. Kibaki won the elections.
In 2007, things changed, the election was divided again, Raila Odinga and William Ruto swatted into new alliance with Kibaki remaining with his region.
Raila from Nyanza and Ruto from Rift Valley. Kibaki retained the seat. Narrow down to Uhuru and Ruto in 2013 to 2022, then Ruto and Rigathi, Kindiki 2022 to 2027.Â
