The Department of TVET and Higher Education will review and align their courses in preparation for the first cohort of CBE students who are expected to join tertiary Education in the year 2029.
The Ministry of Education and the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms, 2023 have already identified seven compulsory subjects comprising; English, Kiswahili, Core Mathematics/Essential Mathematics and community Service Leraning.
Senior Schools; Grade 10 to 12 will comprise three years of Education for learners generally in the age bracket of 15 to 17 years.
Subjects at Senior School are classfied according to three pathways namely; Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEAM), Arts and Sports Science and Social Science.
The Ministry of Education Principal Secretary Prof. Amba Julius Bitok says the essence of Senior School is to offer learners a pre-tertiary/pre-university/pre-career experience during which the learners have an oppurtunity to choose subjects from the pathways where they shall have demonstrated interest or potential at the earlier levels.
According to Prof Bitok, all the learners shall take English, Kiswahili and Community Learning (CSL) and those pursuing the STEM path shall take Core Mathematics while those who shall have chosen any other two pathways will take Essential Mathematics.
If a learner who is not pursuing the STEM pathway opts to take Core Mathematics, they should be allowed to do so depending on their Junior School assesement results.
In addition to the compulsary learning areas, the learner will select three more subjects on advsor that a learner takes at least two subjects from the chosen pathway.
"A learner, may take up to three subjects from another pathway. However, it may be anticipated that a sitution may arise where a learner's career choice requires that they take one subject in each pathway," Prof Bitok says.
