The tragic murder of Farida Kadzo, a 17-year-old girl from Kilifi, has sparked outrage and renewed calls for action against gender-based violence (GBV).
Kadzo was allegedly killed by her boyfriend on June 6, 2025 , in Kijipwa after refusing to accompany him to a family event.
Kadzo, a survivor of sexual violence, had previously been defiled at the age of 13 and was receiving support from the International Justice Mission (IJM) Kenya. Her murder has reignited discussions on femicide, with activists condemning the systemic failures that continue to expose women and girls to harm.
IJM Senior Manager Aggrey Juma dismissed claims that the incident was merely a romantic dispute, stating, “This case is not about a ‘love triangle,’ as some early media reports have suggested. It is about power, control, and the systemic failure to protect survivors of violence.
Farida’s story reflects the harsh reality that many girls and women face—where poverty, gender inequality, and weak enforcement of laws create a deadly environment for survivors”
Kadzo’s aunt, who was present at a press briefing alongside her mother and grandmother, expressed deep sorrow over the loss. She urged authorities to ensure justice is served, saying, “Farida’s life mattered. Her story must not end in silence. Let this tragedy be a turning point in the fight against femicide and all forms of violence against women and children"
The suspect was arrested on June 9, 2025, and is currently in police custody as investigations continue. Authorities are expected to press charges in the coming days.
Rights groups and Kadzo’s family are now demanding justice, calling for stronger enforcement of laws to protect women from violence.
