DAD OF UTUMISHI GIRLS FIRE VICTIM QUESTIONS SONKO'S INTENTIONS AFTER BURIAL SUPPORT
The father of a Utumishi Girls Academy fire victim has acknowledged Mike Sonko's support during his daughter's burial but questioned the publicity surrounding the donation, saying most funeral arrangements had already been handled by other leaders and well-wishers.
The father of the late Zuhura Rama, one of the students who tragically lost her life in the deadly Utumishi Girls Academy fire, has publicly questioned the intentions behind the assistance offered by former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko during his daughter's burial in Kwale County.
Speaking shortly after laying his daughter to rest, Rama Mohammed expressed gratitude to all individuals and leaders who stood with the family during their difficult time. However, he maintained that Sonko's contribution was relatively small compared to the support that had already been provided by other well-wishers and local leaders.
According to the grieving father, most of the burial arrangements had already been completed before Sonko became involved. He noted that transportation, funeral logistics, and other key expenses had largely been handled by leaders from the Coast region, including Msambweni MP Feisal Abdallah, alongside family members and friends who rallied around them during their time of grief.
“Sonko helped us a little, and we appreciate it,” Rama said, adding that the family received KSh 50,000 from the former governor to help cater for mourners during the funeral. Despite acknowledging the gesture, he emphasized that the amount represented only a small portion of the overall support the family received.
The bereaved father also took issue with the manner in which the assistance was publicized on social media. He argued that publicizing charitable acts can create the impression that one person carried a larger share of the responsibility than was actually the case. He urged leaders and well-wishers to offer support out of compassion rather than for recognition.
“If you help someone, you should not show off. Help should come from the heart,” he said.
The comments have sparked discussion online, with some Kenyans supporting the father's sentiments while others defended Sonko, noting that any form of assistance during a time of mourning should be appreciated regardless of the amount.
The burial comes as families across the country continue to mourn the victims of the devastating fire that struck Utumishi Girls Academy. The tragedy claimed the lives of 16 students and left many others injured, sending shockwaves across the nation and prompting renewed calls for stricter safety measures in schools.
As investigations into the cause of the fire continue, the families of the victims remain focused on healing and seeking answers. For Rama Mohammed, the loss of his daughter is a painful reminder of a tragedy that has forever changed the lives of many families.
