ODM OUSTS NAIROBI SENATOR EDWIN SIFUNA AS SECRETARY-GENERAL IN MAJOR LEADERSHIP SHAKE-UP

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has removed Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna from his position as the party’s Secretary-General with immediate effect, following a decision by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC).

The move, announced on Monday, June 22, 2026, marks the latest chapter in a protracted internal battle within Raila Odinga’s party. Acting Secretary-General Catherine Omanyo confirmed the decision in an official statement, saying the NEC unanimously adopted recommendations from the party’s Internal Dispute Resolution Committee (IDRC).

“After going through the report and the findings of the IDRC under Article 74 Section 2 of the party constitution, the NEC unanimously adopted the committee’s recommendation and endorsed the removal from office of Senator Edwin Watenya Sifuna,” Omanyo stated. “Effectively, Senator Sifuna ceases to be the Secretary General of the ODM party.”

The party expressed appreciation for Sifuna’s past contributions and wished him well in his future endeavors.

Sifuna’s removal follows months of tensions. In February 2026, the NEC had attempted to oust him over allegations of gross misconduct, including repeatedly contradicting party positions, skipping official meetings, and engaging in unsanctioned political activities.

Sifuna successfully challenged the initial ouster at the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT), which ruled that the process lacked due process and fair hearing. However, a more recent tribunal ruling on June 18 cleared the way for fresh disciplinary proceedings, provided proper procedures were followed.

ODM officials maintain that the latest process complied with the party constitution, including proper notification.

The embattled senator has rejected the decision, describing it as illegal and unconstitutional. Sifuna insists he remains the duly elected Secretary-General and has pledged to appeal the removal through all available avenues, including the courts.

He argues that the process violated the party’s constitution and principles of natural justice, claiming he was not given an adequate opportunity to defend himself. Sifuna retains his position as Nairobi Senator, though the development has sparked speculation about his future influence within ODM structures.

The ouster highlights deepening divisions within ODM, particularly around the party’s strategic direction and its relationship with the current administration. Sifuna has been vocal on various national issues, often taking positions that appeared at odds with the party leadership.

The decision comes as ODM continues to navigate its role in Kenya’s evolving political landscape ahead of future electoral cycles. Supporters of Sifuna have rallied behind him, while some critics have described the removal as overdue.

As the dust settles, all eyes remain on whether Sifuna will mount a successful legal challenge or if this marks the end of his tenure in one of ODM’s topmost positions. The party has named Deputy Secretary-General Catherine Omanyo to act in the role in the interim.
