CAUGHT IN THE ACT: YOUNG COW THIEF NABBED IN MOGONGA AS RESIDENTS DECLARE WAR ON CATTLE RUSTLING
Mogonga, Bomachoge Chache, Kisii County – A young boy was arrested after being caught with a cow suspected to have been stolen from North Karachuonyo in Oyugis. The incident, which occurred in Maya, Omosasa, has sparked outrage among residents over rising cases of cattle theft involving young people.

According to local accounts, the suspect was not alone. He was with three other individuals who fled in different directions when they were confronted. The Chief from North Karachuonyo confirmed the details of the chase.
“We found three people with that cow and they were going in different directions,” the chief stated.
A resident of Rongo described how the theft unfolded in the early hours of the morning.

“That cow was stolen at around 2am. We realized around 3am and started searching. Some of us searched at Riosiri while others went to the market. When we started coming back, we found three people with it.”
The discovery prompted strong condemnation from members of the public, who blamed a growing “spirit of theft” among the youth. Residents expressed frustration at the repeated incidents and called for immediate police action. Police officers from Ogembo responded to the scene and took the suspect to the station for further questioning.
The Chief from North Karachuonyo highlighted the severity of cattle rustling in society, contrasting local responses with those in neighboring communities.
“If that incident occurred in Luo land, the suspect could have been killed since theft is bad in the society.”
Another resident emphasized the need for improved security and community vigilance.
“Security has been an issue in our societies. We warn the residents that we will be patrolling at night and if we find any person stealing, the law will take action.”
The owner of the recovered cow expressed relief mixed with ongoing frustration, noting that this was the third animal stolen from their homestead.
“This is the third cow to be stolen and when they are being stolen we have never found them. We never believed that we would find those cows. We always suspected that they were taken to Riosiri for slaughter but now we have found where they are being taken to Mogonga.”

The owner and other residents urged young people to abandon cattle theft and instead engage in lawful means of acquiring livestock.
Local leaders and security agencies have been called upon to address the rising cases of cattle rustling, which continue to threaten livelihoods and peaceful coexistence in the region.
