UTUMISHI GIRLS ACADEMY FIRE TRAGEDY LEAVES 16 DEAD AS POLICE PROBE SUSPECTED ARSON

The nation is mourning following a devastating fire tragedy at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil, Nakuru County, that claimed the lives of 16 students and left dozens injured. The fire broke out in one of the school dormitories shortly after midnight, catching many learners asleep and causing panic within the institution.

According to reports from authorities, at least 79 students sustained injuries during the incident, with several rushed to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment. Police have since detained over 30 students as investigations intensify into claims that the blaze may have been deliberately started. Detectives suspect the fire could have been an act of arson, although official investigations are still ongoing.

Survivors revealed heartbreaking moments from the tragedy, saying some dormitory doors were allegedly locked from inside, making escape difficult as thick smoke and flames spread rapidly through the building. Some students reportedly jumped through windows in desperate attempts to save their lives.

Government officials, forensic experts, and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations arrived at the scene to begin investigations and assist in identifying victims, some of whom were badly burnt. Parents and relatives gathered outside the school in grief and confusion as rescue teams continued recovery operations.

President William Ruto and other leaders sent messages of condolence to the affected families, promising support and calling for thorough investigations into the incident. Education authorities have also pledged to review safety measures in boarding schools across the country to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

The Utumishi Girls Academy fire has once again raised serious concerns about school safety, emergency preparedness, and the increasing number of dormitory fires reported in Kenyan schools over the years.
