Five officers interdicted after the death of a teacher in police custody

The National Police Service has released a statement shedding light on the passing of Albert Omondi Ojwang.

Omondi lost his life while in police custody at Central Police Station, Nairobi.

According to the official communication from the Office of the Inspector General, NPS clarified that Ojwang had been lawfully arrested by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations on charges of false publication.

The statement reveals that Ojwang sustained head injuries while in custody after hitting his head against a cell wall.

"Upon noticing the injuries, the police officers on duty acted swiftly and transferred him to Mbagathi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival," the statement explained.

The news of this incident has sparked widespread concern on various social media platforms, persuading the Independent Policing Oversight Authority to launch an investigation in accordance with legal obligations.

NPS emphasizes its commitment to respecting and safeguarding the constitutional rights of individuals, as well as fundamental freedoms.

They assured the public of transparency and accountability in the ongoing investigations by IPOA.
