Fred Matiangi issues a statement on the ongoing Gen Z protests

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i, who is eyeing the 2027 presidential race, issued a poignant statement in solidarity with the demonstrators. 

He expressed his deep concern for the families who have suffered loss and reiterated the importance of listening to the voices of young citizens. "I fully associate myself with the sentiments that they expressed," he stated, urging the government to heed the citizens' call for justice and reform.

Thousands of young Kenyans took to the streets across the country to commemorate the tragic events of June 25, 2024, when several members of Generation Z lost their lives during protests against the controversial Finance Bill 2024.

The demonstrations, which began as a peaceful expression of dissent over punitive tax policies, mismanagement of public resources, and reduced government funding to universities, have evolved into a powerful movement advocating for justice and reform.

Matiang’i emphasized that the protests are an exercise of a protected right to petition the authorities, urging law enforcement to refrain from using force against peaceful demonstrators.

 "Please do not turn your weapons on your fellow citizens," he implored security officers, calling for restraint and sobriety in handling the situation. "It is only through dialogue and a genuine willingness to listen that we will find a path to peaceful resolution of grievances."

The former CS's statement comes at a critical time as tensions rise between the government and its youth population. The protests reflect a growing discontent among young Kenyans who feel marginalized and unheard in the political discourse.
