Woman Rescued After Near-Drowning While Crossing A River

A woman narrowly escaped death after being swept by strong currents while crossing a river.

Residents of Ibeno ward,  Kisii County are calling for urgent government intervention after a woman identified as Kerubo nearly drowned while attempting to cross the Nyanturago River.

According to locals, the woman was trying to cross the river when the water level suddenly rose due to strong currents, putting her life in danger. A young man who witnessed the incident quickly responded and managed to rescue her before the situation turned fatal.

The dramatic rescue left residents shaken, with many saying the river crossing has become extremely dangerous, especially during the rainy season when water levels rise.

Following the incident, residents and relatives of the woman held a small celebration to express gratitude after she survived the frightening ordeal.

Community members used the opportunity to renew their appeal to local leaders and the government to repair the nearby bridge and raise it higher than the river’s water level to prevent similar incidents in the future.

They said the current bridge structure is too low and becomes unsafe whenever the river swells, forcing residents to risk their lives while crossing.

Residents now hope that authorities will take immediate action to upgrade the bridge and improve safety for people who rely on the crossing for their daily activities.
