BURIAL WITHOUT A BODY

A family in Kisii County has held a symbolic burial ceremony for their relative, who is believed to have died while fighting in the war in Ukraine.

The ceremony took place in Omariba Ward, Bonchari Constituency, where family members and villagers gathered to mourn the young man despite the absence of his body. Instead of burying a casket, the family planted a tree during the ceremony to symbolically represent his final resting place.

Relatives said the decision to hold the unusual burial was made after months of uncertainty surrounding Nyapara’s fate, with reports indicating that he may have died while involved in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

According to the family, Nyapara had travelled abroad in search of better opportunities but later became linked to reports of Kenyans who were allegedly recruited to fight as soldiers in the conflict.

The burial without a body reflects the pain and uncertainty experienced by the family, who say they have not received official confirmation or repatriation of his remains.

Community members who attended the ceremony expressed sympathy with the family, noting that the situation highlights the risks faced by young Kenyans who travel overseas in search of employment under unclear arrangements.

In recent months, reports have emerged of several Kenyan citizens being recruited or ending up in the conflict involving Russia and Ukraine, with some reportedly losing their lives on the battlefield.

Authorities in Kenya have previously warned citizens to be cautious when accepting foreign job offers, particularly those that may involve military activities or recruitment into armed conflicts.

For the family of Clinton Nyapara, the symbolic burial marked a painful moment of closure, as they continue to hope for more information about what truly happened to their loved one.
