Emily Kerubo stands as a powerful symbol of resilience and determination, shattering cultural barriers in a male-dominated sector.

Also know as "Mama Nduthi," Kerubo,a middle aged woman, a mother of two, born in Nyamira county is beating all odds as a full time boda boda rider in the busy streets of Mosiabano, Ogembo, Bomachoge Chache Sub-county, Kisii County.

From joblessness to a thriving boda boda business, she has carved out independence and security for her family.

Her story is a testament to the power of perseverance, demonstrating that with courage and hard work, anyone can overcome adversity and build a brighter future.

Kerubo shares her life journey from being jobless to becoming a near independent mother of two.

She recounts how she joined the boda boda industry back in 2017 operating in a largely patriarchal society-Gusii.

She initially involved herself in all sorts of jobs like construction, farming and casual jobs.

While staying with her sister who was also a boda boda operator, she used to train while at home in Mogonga.

Kerubo recounts how she got help in training from her neighbour and with time she got experience.

In 2019 she moved out of her sister place and after a while she was able to buy a second hand motorcycle.

By 2023 she officially ventured into the boda boda business. She says the boda boda business has become a big source of income for her family.

Kerubo, breaking into the male dominated sector has helped her pay school for her children, rent and cater for basic needs.

With time she has been able to build trust with her clients and now she has a loyal customer base.

"Pillions have created trust in me. They believe am honest, a careful rider and respectful."

Despite the challenges, Kerubo says she still sees herself in the same business for the next couple of years.

Kerubo calls for government support in repairing roads and placing an age restriction for those who wish to join the boda boda sector.
