Raila Slams Murkomen Over Police Directives

 By Vera Mokeira

Two days ago, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen caused a stir with controversial "shoot to kill" remarks directed at police officers.

The comments have been widely condemned, with former Prime Minister Raila Odinga being the latest to criticize the CS for what he called "reckless and unlawful directives."

Speaking in Bondo, the ODM leader strongly denounced Murkomen's statement.

Odinga emphasized that police are not authorized to kill and that such statements undermine the rule of law and disregard human life.

"The police should never ever shoot to kill if someone has committed a crime, he should be taken to court."

In response to the backlash, Murkomen has clarified his position, claiming his comments were taken out of context.

The Interior CS stated that his remarks align with Section B (1) of the National Police Service Act, which permits officers to use firearms for self-defense or to protect others from imminent threats of death or serious injury.

Odinga also addressed the tragic events of the June 25 protests, where several lives were lost.

He condemned the infiltration of otherwise peaceful Gen Z protests by criminal elements who engaged in looting and property destruction.

The former premier offered his condolences to the families of those who died. "We witnessed a lot of bloodshed there were criminals who came out to do deliberate destruction of property."

Raila called for a national dialogue, urging both citizens and leaders to engage in constructive conversations to unite the country.
