Samburu Chief rescues a girl abducted by Morans

A 14-year-old girl in Samburu was rescued from the morans who had abducted her from school and taken her to their father's home to become a herder.

The incident occurred at Nairimirimur Primary School in Samburu East Sub-County, where the girl had gone to school.

The girl had lost his father's camel while herding and was afraid of his father's confrontation, so she sought refuge in the school.

The head teacher, who was there to account for the events, reported that the young girl was not registered at the school and had come there seeking refuge.

The headteacher said; “When she came and explained her case to us, we allowed her to stay in school while we waited for her parents, but instead the Morans showed up and violently took her away."

In a viral video of the school incident, Samburu Morans were captured dragging the girl out of her classroom while beating her with canes, before fleeing with her on a motorcycle.

The video has been circulating on the internet, receiving mixed reactions from social media users, with some calling out the Morans for such an act towards a young girl.

The Morans took her to the father's home, and later on, she was rescued from the homestead by Chief Daniel Lentoijoni of the Nairimirimur, before being taken to the Department of Children's Services office in Wamba town.

Daniel Lentoijoni said that many parents in the area tend to neglect taking their children to school and prefer to use their children as herders.

He emphasises the need for targeted awareness campaigns within the community to highlight the value of education and to involve Morans in the fight against violence.

Samburu West MP Naisula Lesuuda strongly condemned the incident, stressing that schools in Samburu County must remain safe spaces for children.

Lesuuda called on the police to swiftly act and apprehend the suspects responsible.  She pointed out that the girl was violently taken from the classroom by Morans for breaking a harmful cultural tradition that robs young girls of their right to safety and access to education.

The National Gender and Equality Commission defines underage cultural pairing as a Samburu cultural practice where warriors engage in non-marital sexual relationships with underage girls.

Samburu County Commissioner John Cheruiyot said investigations are underway to apprehend and prosecute those responsible, urging residents not to take the law into their own hands.
