Taifa care attracts more than 1.8 million informal workers

Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has praised the innovative approach of "Lipa SHA Pole Pole".

Duale says this is a step towards improving healthcare accessibility for millions of Kenyans, especially those in the informal sector.

In a press conference, the CS talked of the advancements of the government's new health financing model, known as Taifa Care.

He highlighted the inclusive nature of the flexible payment system, emphasizing its focus on fairness, equity, and accessibility.

"Lipa SHA Pole Pole allows contributors to make payments daily, weekly, or monthly based on their income, respecting their financial situations and ensuring inclusivity."

Accompanied by government and health sector leaders, including Principal Secretaries Dr. Ouma Oluga and Ms. Mary Muthoni, SHA CEO Dr. Mercy Mwangangi, DHA CEO Eng. Antony Lenaiyara, Dr. Ejersa Wako, and Director General for Health Dr. Patrick Amoth, Duale narrated the government's dedication to establishing a transparent, accountable, and inclusive health coverage system. 

The ultimate objective is to provide affordable and high-quality healthcare services to all Kenyans.

The initiative has pulled together interest, with more than 1.8 million informal sector participants actively contributing, surpassing previous enrollment numbers under the old National Health Insurance Fund framework.

Taifa Care, the successor to NHIF, directs 95 percent of contributions directly towards healthcare services, guaranteeingequality payment to healthcare facilities by the 14th of each month. 

This process enhances efficiency, trust, and the quality of healthcare delivery.

Operating costs are limited to five percent, and contributions are adjusted through a means-testing mechanism to promote fairness across different income brackets.

"Lipa SHA Pole Pole promotes equal opportunities for all individuals, regardless of their income frequency, within the national health protection system," Duale emphasized.
