Woman suffers miscarriage in police custody

The National Police Service (NPS) has confirmed a deeply distressing incident in which a woman suffered a miscarriage while in police custody at the Rwanyambo Police Post in Nyandarua County. 

The announcement, made through an official press statement from the Office of the Inspector General, has triggered an immediate investigation and disciplinary action against the officer in charge.

According to the statement signed by NPS spokesperson Mugithi Nyaga, investigations are underway, led by the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU) in collaboration with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“To ensure a swift, impartial, and transparent investigation,” reads the statement, “the officer in charge of Rwanyambo Police Post has been interdicted with immediate effect.”

The NPS expressed sorrow over the tragedy and emphasized its commitment to accountability and justice.It added that the Service remains committed to upholding the rule of law, human rights, and fundamental freedoms.

The incident has sparked public concern, with calls from civil society and human rights organizations for justice and better treatment of detainees, particularly vulnerable individuals such as pregnant women.
