KRA Deploys Body Cameras to Curb Bribery and Tax Evasion
The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has rolled out more than 350 body cameras for customs officers as part of efforts to curb bribery, reduce corruption and improve accountability in tax collection.
According to the authority, the body-worn cameras will be used by customs staff while carrying out their duties, particularly during cargo inspections and interactions with importers, exporters and clearing agents.
KRA said the move is aimed at ensuring that all cargo is properly inspected and the correct taxes are paid, while also promoting transparency in the handling of goods entering or leaving the country.
The new system is expected to help reduce cases of bribery and tax evasion that have previously been reported at some entry points and cargo handling stations.
Officials noted that the cameras will record activities during customs operations, providing evidence in case of disputes or investigations involving tax compliance and cargo clearance.
The deployment of the body cameras is part of broader reforms by the tax authority to strengthen oversight and enhance integrity among customs officers.
KRA has emphasized that the initiative will also help build public confidence in the country’s tax administration system by ensuring that officers follow the law while performing their duties.
