In a dramatic turn of events during the nationwide Saba Saba Day protests, Manyatta Member of Parliament Gitonga Mukunji was arrested on Monday afternoon in Juja, Kiambu County.

The arrest, confirmed by the National Police Service, has sparked widespread concern among his supporters and fellow lawmakers.

According to his lawyer, Ndegwa Njiru, the legislator was apprehended Monday afternoon and booked at Kibii Police Station.

Shortly after, he was reportedly transferred by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) based at Juja Police Station while his vehicle remained parked at the Kibii station.

Mukunji, a vocal ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and a critic of the current administration, has received strong backing from fellow leaders such as Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina, who has called for his immediate release.

As the nation grapples with the aftermath of the protests, questions linger over the handling of Mukunji’s arrest and the broader implications for political dissent in Kenya.

His supporters continue to demand clarity and justice, while authorities remain tight-lipped about the next steps.

Tuesday morning, the legislator was taken to Kahawa Court; Terrorism Divison for possible prosecution.
