Matiangi calls for dialogue, signals his interest in the 2027 race

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiangi is now setting his sights on the 2027 presidential race with his public pronouncements.

Born in Borabu, Nyamira County, Matiangi’s early years were marked by his strict leadership style. 

He pursued his education obtaining an Undergraduate Degree in English Literature, Communication and Comparative Literature before joining civil service.

Matiangi’s journey began alongside the former Cabinet Minister Simeon Nyachae, where he gained his administrative skills as Nyachae's personal assistant during.

During retired President Uhuru Kenyatta’s term in office, Matiangi became a central figure in the government. He was so visible and vocal.

When President Uhuru wasn’t speaking Matiangi was, this built his reputation as a government insider.

Initially, Matiangi was appointed as the Cabinet Secretary for Information Communication and Technology (ICT) in the year 2013 and made his mark by facilitating Kenya’s transition from analogue to digital broadcasting.

At the Education Ministry, Matiangi tackled corruption in the Kenya examination system by dismantling the networks for leaking national exams, efforts led to an increased improvement of credibility and security.

His bold decisions were highly praised by parents and other education stakeholders.

In the year 2017 the former president appointed him as the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and Coordination of National Government; this position made him Uhuru’s ally. 

Matiangi’s management of national projects earned him praise for being efficient and reliable.

Following President William Ruto’s victory in the 2022 elections, Matiangi decided to keep his profile low after failing to make a comeback to the Cabinet.

Some said that he was avoiding political tension while others believed that he was waiting for the right time. 

Matiangi has made a comeback, this time round, seeking a political seat.

His arrival in the Country was met with a positive response from his supporters, speculating his political ambitions.

In preparation for his presidential bid, Matiangi has actively started engaging in public tours. 

His emphasis on unity and integrity has resonated with a wide audience, positioning him as a candidate focused on action and service delivery.

Matiangi’s vision for the future have generated excitement among his supporters.

Matiangi has urged the government to embrace dialogue and listen to the voices of the protesting citizens.

In his statement, he stood for solidarity with the thousands of the young Kenyans marking one year since the June 25, 2024 protests.

“It’s very disheartening seeing parents burry their children, it should never be the case. The Gen Z a very pertinent issues that can be solved if we had a listening government.”

Matiangi appealed for justice and he also cautioned the security agencies against the use of force on peaceful demonstrators, warning that it could push the country down.

“Please do not turn your weapons on your fellow citizens,” he emphasized
