Medics push for Overhaul of SHA

Dedicated healthcare professionals nationwide are proposing significant revisions to the Social Health Authority (SHA).

This they say is to enhance service delivery and establish a more sustainable and effective medical scheme for all Kenyans.

In an effort to address persistent challenges such as delayed payments, inefficiencies in claims processing, and a lack of accountability within the healthcare system, these proposed changes aim to bring about clarity and fairness.

"We envision a system that benefits not only the authorities but also patients and frontline healthcare providers," expressed one healthcare worker involved in the initiative.

Proposals include simplifying the registration process for health facilities and patients, reevaluating payment structures for prompt fund disbursement, and enhancing transparency in managing contributions under SHA.

Health experts are advocating for increased involvement of stakeholders in policy development, emphasizing the importance of considering the daily realities faced by medical staff.

"We seek to enhance, not oppose, the system," stressed another healthcare provider. "Without these essential reforms, the goal of universal health coverage may remain elusive."

While the Social Health Authority was established to advance universal healthcare implementation, recent concerns from patients and practitioners have spurred calls for review and reform.

The Ministry of Health has received the proposals and is set to engage in discussions with stakeholders in the near future.
