Police Foil Smuggling Attempt in Malaba Busia County

A major smuggling attempt was thwarted on Thursday after police intercepted a lorry carrying suspected uncustomed goods during a targeted operation in Malaba town.

The operation, led by a team of police officers, resulted in the seizure of a white lorry, registration. Upon being flagged down, the driver reportedly escaped on foot.

The lorry was towed to Malaba Police Station where a multi-agency security team conducted a thorough inspection.

The search revealed 32 drums, each suspected to hold 250 litres of ethanol, cleverly concealed beneath 52 and a half sacks of what is believed to be wheat bran.

Authorities have confirmed that the vehicle and the recovered consignment are being held at the station as investigations continue. 

Efforts to identify and apprehend the fugitive driver are currently underway.

The National Police Service reiterated its dedication to safeguarding the country against illicit trade and protecting public safety.

"We remain vigilant and committed to upholding the law."

This latest incident adds to a series of crackdowns aimed at curbing smuggling activities along Kenya’s border with Uganda.
