Senator Onyonka calls for audit of Social Health Insurance Payouts

BY ERIC ABUGA
Kisii County Senator Richard Onyonka has called for urgent Senate investigations into alleged irregularities in disbursements from the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHA).
Speaking on the Senate Floor while requesting for statements, Onyonka urged the committee on Health to act swiftly, citing concerns about public trust and the responsible use of taxpayers’ money.
The senator raised alarm over disruptions in public hospital services following the rollout of the new SHA scheme.
He questioned the fairness of the fund’s distribution, noting that while some Level Five hospitals received more than Sh 30 million, others received as little as Sh2,000.Â
He also called for clarity regarding the Sh 104 billion Integrated Health Information Technology System intended to support SHA operations.
“There is no uniformity. You cannot explain why a hospital in Embu gets millions while another in Vihiga receives next to nothing. This calls for a full audit,” Onyonka stated.
Â
He urged the Health Committee to determine whether the Ministry of Health had followed due process in allocating funds and implementing the digital system.
