10 Police officers in custody over Nakuru shooting

10 police officers have been arrested after a bhang raid in Nakuru’s London Estate turned tragic with the shooting of a resident.

Police were attempting to arrest an alleged trafficker in the area when the incident occurred.

A suspect had been detained earlier, and the police sought to know the source of the marijuana that the known peddler was selling.

Police say the peddler accepted and took them to the place he claimed to be the source of the marijuana he sold, which is in the London Estate, Nakuru.

On arrival at the alleged source, the police arrested three more people who are believed to be the key role players in the marijuana business in the area.

Not knowing that the three held relevant influence and authority in the trade, the police said the operation turned confrontational when the locals started throwing stones at them, demanding that the arrested personnel be released.

The police fired a few rounds in the air to disperse the mob, and that is when one of the residents was shot fatally in the mouth.

A police officer was also injured during the confrontation.

In a later turn of events, bitter youths stormed Nakuru Teaching and Referral Hospital, demanding the body of the slain man.

The chaos caused hospital services to halt for several hours until additional police officers were deployed to secure the area.

The slain man is said to have been working at a dumpsite in the London area and was a widower with children.

Residents bitterly want action taken on the police officers involved in the murder.

Nakuru police commander Michael Mwaura has confirmed the that 10 police officers involved in the operation have been taken into custody as investigations take place.

The 10 suspects were disarmed, and their weapons were taken in for ballistic examination to determine who fired the fatal shot.

The implicated officers will be presented on Wednesday in an identification parade for witnesses to determine if they were the present officers during the raid.
