Deputy IG Eliud Lagat Steps Aside Over Albert Ojwang Death Probe

Deputy Inspector General in charge of Regular Police Eliud Lagat has stepped aside Monday afternoon amid ongoing investigations into the death of Albert Ojwang.

In his statement, Lagat has mentioned a deep sense of responsibility and the importance of allowing a fair investigation into the incident. 

He has announced his choice to step back until the investigation is completed, with his deputy performing his duties during this period.

"The regrettable event of Ojwang's passing has influenced my decision, l have chosen to step aside today until the investigations are concluded."

Lagat expressed his readiness to cooperate with the investigations and highlighted his dedication to justice and accountability. 

He also extended sincere condolences to the family of the late Ojwang, acknowledging the deep impact of the loss.

"I am committed to providing any assistance needed during the investigations, my heartfelt condolences go out to the family," he affirmed.

The passing of Ojwang has sparked nationwide concern, with human rights organizations, civil society, and the public calling for a thorough and unbiased investigation.

His death, which allegedly occurred in police custody, has raised concerns about police behavior and accountability mechanisms within the force.
