Gen Z's in Nyamira opt out of protest

A day expected to be marked by nationwide protests in remembrance of Gen Z youth who lost their lives during last year’s demonstrations turns out to be peaceful and calm in Nyamira County.

The protests, meant to commemorate the young lives lost while demonstrating against the 2024/2025 Finance Bill, was largely absent in Nyamira. 

Authorities in the County state that no formal approval had been granted for demonstrations, which they say led to the prevention of any public gatherings.

Despite the calm, many residents voiced their frustration at not being given an opportunity to participate in the commemorative demonstrations. 

Fear of possible demonstrations had a noticeable impact on daily life in the county.

Public transport saw a sharp drop in passenger numbers, while most businesses remained closed throughout the day. 

Drivers expressed concern about the economic hit caused by the uncertainty. 

Although no protests took place, the day served as a reminder of the deep concerns still simmering beneath the surface, especially among Kenya’s youth who continue to demand change, justice, and a government that listens.
