The Media Council of Kenya has strongly denounced the violent attacks on journalists and is calling for the immediate restoration of television broadcasts that were temporarily halted during the Wednesday protests.
The Council praised Kenyan journalists for their professionalism and ethical reporting during the demonstrations, highlighting their adherence to guidelines promoting transparency and accountability.
Expressing deep concern over the injuries sustained by journalists in Nairobi and Nakuru, the MCK labeled the assaults as unacceptable and a direct violation of press freedom and democratic principles.
The Council commended both the police and protesters for respecting the media's right to operate without hindrance, emphasizing the importance of a free and informed society.
"Such assaults on media practitioners are intolerable, striking at the heart of press freedom and democratic values."
In solidarity with other media organizations, the MCK criticized the temporary shutdown of television stations as an unjustified overreach.
Despite the ban being lifted promptly by the High Court, the Council lauded Kenya's broadcast media for maintaining high standards of professionalism under pressure.
To prevent misinformation and speculation caused by disrupted communication, the MCK urged the government and relevant authorities to restore media signals promptly.
Additionally, the Council called for constructive dialogue and the creation of a supportive environment for balanced and responsible media coverage.
David Omwoyo Omwoyo, the Chief Executive Officer and Secretary of the Council, reaffirmed MCK's commitment to upholding media independence in Kenya.
“We remain committed to supporting a free, independent, and responsible press in Kenya,” he affirmed.
