Tensions have flared in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) as demonstrators take to the streets demanding justice for social media influencer and teacher Albert Ojwang.
Protesters, primarily Gen Z activists, have gathered at key locations, including Moi Avenue and Kimathi Street, waving Kenyan flags and chanting slogans for accountability.
The protests, which began early Tuesday morning, have seen police deploy anti-riot officers across the CBD.
Tear gas has been used to disperse crowds, leading to running battles between demonstrators and law enforcement.
Businesses along major streets, including Kenyatta Avenue and Tom Mboya Street, have remain on a stand still due to the unrest.
Kenyans are calling for the resignation of Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat.
Although Lagat stepped aside pending investigations, protesters insist that his temporary withdrawal is insufficient and are demanding his full resignation.
In addition to Nairobi, protests have spread to other cities, including Mombasa, where demonstrators are carrying placards reading “Stop killing us” and marching through main streets. The situation remains fluid, with police maintaining a heavy presence to prevent further disruptions.
Authorities have urged calm, but demonstrators remain resolute in their calls for justice.
